Het glasshouse horticulture business of the A.L.A Vollering brothers was founded back in 1985. At the time cucumbers were cultivated on an area of 10,000 m2. In 1998 the Vollering brothers added a 700 m2 foil greenhouse for the cultivation of agapanthus (also called African lily). It was partly thanks to this flower that their interest in the cut flower cultivation was aroused.
In 1999 the two brothers decided to break new ground and say goodbye to the vegetable cultivation. After a long search for a suitable product they took up the cut hortensia cultivation, which was then still in its infancy. At the time only a mere 150,000 m2 of cut hortensias were cultivated in the entire Netherlands. So it was quite a switch from a rather well-known product to the cultivation of a flower that was hardly known. But all this was worth the trouble. After having learnt a lot from the cultivation the agapanthus segment was expanded with another foil greenhouse of some 2,300 m2. Meanwhile this greenhouse has been filled with hortensias.
The interest in hortensias grew bigger and bigger and in 2005 a neighbouring 10,000 m2 business was purchased and filled with cut hortensias too. In 2007 the Vollering brothers bought another company, comprising an area of 12,500 m2, which was also filled with cut hortensias. Recently the Gebroeders Vollering CV said goodbye to the agapanthus and they are currently marketing the most varied possible assortment of cut hortensias. This development will be continued intensively in the future since the cultivation of these flowers requires a high amount of care. As the last few years have shown a lot of movement in the field of innovation and assortment improvement in this market, it is essential to keep abreast of the innovations.
For example, in 2011 a new glasshouse of approximately 2.2 ha was built, in which a better growing climate can be realised. Through climate optimisation they hope to achieve an even better quality. This year will also see construction work: an old department of about 1.3 ha will be fully refurbished. The coming winter species will be heated here, so that in early spring a better quality of cut hortensias can be put on the market.
