Grower of the week! Klaas Joren Lilacs
The people in Holland named him as the ´Lilac Specialist´. And he is definitely a specialised for a long time!
Klaas Joren founded in 1890 and from origin they were growing plants and lilacs. Because of the competition in the plants business they were focussing on Lilacs only.
At the moment they are having 16 (!!!) varieties of this special cut flower and from every variety they have between the 20 – 5000 shrubs. The main colours are in the spectrum of white, lila and pink. The availability of the varieties are depending on the amount of shrubs.
To make the calculation complete: they have in Total 50.000 shrubs; 25.000 shrubs from that Total are every year available at the greenhouse to produce flowers.
The Lilacs are grown in a very special way. A shrub is producing flowers once in the two years. That means that you can only harvest from 25.000 shrubs each year.
The shrubs are in the summer on an ‘island’ on the waters in Aalsmeer. The one year that they aren’t producing flowers, they are resting. The other year they will be transfered to greenhouse where they stay from October till February.
Depending the variety they are three weeks in the greenhouse in the early season (October) or later in the season (till February). The first week of this three weeks in the greenhouse they are under very high temperatures to force the flowers to grow.
These temperatures are between the 30 and sometimes 40 degrees! After the first week they will cooling the greenhouse down to around the 15 – 20 degrees. After three weeks the flowers will be cut and they are ready for transport to you, the client.
